Sedbergh is the perfect place to enjoy all manner of outdoor activities, from walking, mountain biking, canoeing, to wild swimming and everything in between.

There are museums, galleries, castles, manor houses and gardens to explore nearby too. And what’s more, it’s the perfect base for exploring the majesty of the Lake District National Park and the Yorkshire Dales National Park. There are several Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, including the Pennines, Arnside & Silverdale Coast, and Forest of Bowland, only a stone’s throw away too. A short drive away is Hadrian’s Wall Country and the 2000-year-old city of Carlisle, the start or finish of the famous Settle-Carlisle Railway. There’s plenty of nature to check out too, including Ospreys at Foulshaw Moss, and all manner of creatures at Smardale Gill Nature Reserve, Burns Beck Moss, Killington Bridge Nature Reserve and Bruce Loch, Sedbergh.

Fairfield Mill from Sedbergh

A lovely walk along the river Rawthey to Farfield Mill Arts & Heritage Centre, with a choice of return routes. Mainly flat, occasionally uneven, excellent views and good birdlife along the river.

Cautley Spout

Cautley Spout is a spectacular waterfall on the eastern side of the Howgill Fells. It is England’s highest waterfall above ground, tumbling 200 metres in a series of cascades.

Dent Circular from Sedbergh

A superb walk to Dent village. Crossing over low fell country with stunning views before making its way back to Sedbergh down beautiful Dentdale.
Length: 19km (11.75 miles)

Akay Wood & River Rawthey

A popular circular walk at any time of the year visiting the 'Pepperpot', Akay Wood, the ancient Akay Oak and following the banks of the Rawthey back to town.
Length: 3.7km (2.3 miles)
Time: 60 - 90 minute

Dales Way, Luneside & Craggstones

A lovely circular walk starting along the Dales Way and visiting the rivers Rawthey and Lune before returning along the bottom edge of the fell.
Length: 11.7km (7.3 miles)
Ascent: 355 metres

Bowerdale Classic

A truly classic circuit that should be saved for a good day. Not for the faint hearted!
Distance: 39.5km (24.5 miles)

Sedbergh, Howgill & Dentdale

Lovely views and a combination of quiet lanes with short sections of pleasant off roading.
Distance: 16km (10 miles)
Time: 3 - 4 hours

Bram Rigg & Calders

A challenging ride taking in some high mountain country with fantastic views to the Lakes and Dales. This route requires a good level of fitness and experience.

Frostrow Fells & Dent

A varied ride with a good mix of on and off road. Lovely views of Dentdale and of the Howgills on the descent.

Howgills Circuit from Sedbergh via Orton & Ravenstonedale

A stunning complete circuit of the Howgill Fells.

Lune Valley, Barbondale & Dentdale

Relatively short road route, with some lovely quiet roads to the picturesque village of Barbon and a gradual climb up stunning Barbondale before a steep descent and a gentle ride back to Sedbergh.

Sedbergh, Hawes & Kirby Stephen via Buttertubs

A challenging ride winding its way through the dramatic scenery of the Garsdale valley, the exposed open moors and the challenge of the iconic Buttertubs climb of Tour de France fame.

Riverside to Dentdale & Cowgill

Starting in Sedbergh follow quiet back-roads to reach Dent with its quaint cobbled streets. Continue up the valley all the way to Cowgill or do a shorter ride and return direct to Sedbergh.

Ride: Easy
